artist statement Utilizing acrylic paint and prismacolor pencils, I create images of places and events which have shaped the person I am and determined the path of my life. Beginning with a realistic image, I allow the work to evolve into color and textures. My hope for the viewer is that they will be drawn to the works, seeing images and experiencing their own emotional response to them. Recent work includes a series based on images of pilgrimage. The circular format is divided into four quadrants whose intersection creates a cruciform, much like a labyrinth. The large circular format has evolved into smaller, heavily textured images which continue to incorporate the circle. Touches of gold or copper leaf are applied to the paintings textured ridges to emphasize the spiritual origin of the work. The earthen colors in a number of the cruciform paintings were influenced by the paintings of Alberto Giocometti. The layers of textures and submerged colors evident in the massive works of Anselm Kiefer have informed the layering and increasing amounts of texture in my own work.
