Spiders are small, eight legged animals that spin silk. The silk web is used to catch other insects, which the spiders feed on. Due to the venomous bite of the black widow and the brown recluse spiders, people have developed a strong fear of all spiders called arachnophobia.

There are a variety of common spiders including house, dust, daddy long legs, orb, web, cobweb, wolf, cellar, funnel web and jumping spiders. Most spider bites are very mild, producing a redness and swelling similar to a mosquito bite. Spiders have either 6 or 8 eyes in various arrangements. They lay their eggs within a ball shaped silk sac. Each sac may contain up to several hundred eggs depending on the type of spider.

Spiders are arachnids, not insects. The arachnid family includes daddy long legs, scorpions and ticks. Insects have six legs not eight and include ants, bees, beetles and roaches.

Treatment for spiders may include sprays, dust, exclusion, granular and perimeter spraying. The use a vacuum sweeps is best for removing spider eggs, webs and live spiders from cracks and crevices. Always throw out the vacuum bag after use.
