Bald faced hornets create large grey hanging nests that are not always easy to spot. The nests are found in tree branches, bushes and sometimes in homes. The nest consist of several layers of paper that the hornets produce by combining wood particles with their saliva. Inside the layers of paper are cells containing the developing larvae. Hornets may become very aggressive to anything that is close to their nest in the late summer or early fall. They are protecting the queens that are being developed. These queens will live out the winter in tree bark, under rocks, in the ground or behind the siding on your home until the following spring. Control is done by aerosols, dust, sprays or by removing the nest and part of the tree branch into a bag.
